After the values dialogue, 93% of staff know the values of HUS

At the beginning of 2020, HUS launched a new strategy and at the same time new values, which were chosen with the participation of the staff. The HUS values are Encounter, Pioneering and Equality.

All staff were invited to participate in a joint values debate

In 2020, the focus of the strategy work was to make values known and the entire HUS staff, 27 000 people, were invited to participate in a joint values discussion. The aim was to find out how the staff perceive the HUS values in their work and how they are reflected in their work throughout HUS and at the unit level.

Staff had the opportunity to give their views, comment and discuss values anonymously online. This gave staff the opportunity to communicate with management on the implementation of the values and the challenges they face in their daily work.

- Our goal was to make sure that everyone in HUS knows the values of HUS and how they relate to their own work," says Elisa Tikka, Director of Communications at HUS.

- Values are the cornerstone of action: they communicate what we exist for and discussing them makes everyone reflect on whether I am acting in accordance with them in my everyday life and whether I am living them in my work. It is important that the organisation's values resonate with your own personal values, because then work is perceived as meaningful," Elisa says.

31% of employees responded to the value dialogue. This is an impressive result given the challenging period in the midst of the interest rate epidemic. More than 35,000 responses were received and over 14,000 open comments were made.

"The service was easy to use and the personal invitation motivated me to respond. The anonymity allowed for secure commenting. There was interest and demand for this kind of service!"

HUS values were perceived as personally important

Above all, the comments conveyed the impression that people are proud of their professionalism and committed to working for patients. They also have a genuine desire to improve.

The values dialogue showed that the values chosen by HUS were perceived as personally important. The direction is therefore the right one.

- We have found values that feel like our own. A staff survey at the end of the year showed that 93% of staff know the values of the organisation, which is an excellent result. The next step is to put what we have learned into practice. There is always room for improvement," says Elisa.
